The Seaport Hotel

Introduction

The Seaport Hotel opened on the South Boston Waterfront in 1998 as an extension of the Boston World Trade Center. With several bee hives on the fifth floor roof and one of the first eco-friendly roofs in the country, the Seaport Hotel has been consistently named one of “America’s Greenest Hotels.” The Boston Business Journal also named it one of the “Best Places to Work” in 2006 and 2013.

William is the Director of Food and Beverage at the award-winning Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center. His wide purview of the 250,000 square feet of space includes the employee cafeteria, which provides complimentary meals and drinks for 600 hotel employees any time between 7am and 8pm.

Problem/Situation

According to William, employees in the hospitality business are notorious for having unhealthy eating habits. Everyone works long hours and a lot of the work is labor intensive. As a result, many of them eat carb-heavy meals and drink sugary beverages.

As the providers of food and beverages for the entire hotel, William and his team are thoughtful about their impact on the health of guests and employees. He wanted to encourage his employees to pursue healthier lifestyles by providing them with healthier food and better beverage options.

As William explained, the biggest asset of any food and beverage program is the staff. His employees interact directly with the guests and influence the quality of their overall experience. In an industry in which great employees are increasingly more difficult to come by, William is constantly on the lookout for new products and services that would add value for his employees and show them that the hotel appreciates their hard work.

Solution

When William first heard about Bevi, he immediately looked into getting the water machine for the hotel’s employee cafeteria. William and his staff were thrilled!  Employees were constantly approaching him to tell him what a great product it was.

Employees especially love the variety of  beverage options that the Bevi water machine provides. It makes living a healthier lifestyle easier. People are becoming more aware of what they’re eating and drinking, especially the amount of sugar they’re consuming. Before the Bevi machine was installed, 70% of the employees were drinking soda with their meals. Now, with the Bevi machine, more people are getting unsweetened, flavored sparkling water instead, and soda consumption has dropped to 10%.

William also likes that the Bevi water machine is reducing the carbon footprint of the employee cafeteria. As one of “America’s Greenest Hotels,” the Seaport Hotel is always looking for ways to be eco-friendly. Bevi fit right in by cutting the use of plastic bottles and cans. The water machine also encourages users to bring their own refillable water bottles or use reusable cups. Therefore, the  Bevi machine is not only promoting a healthier lifestyle in terms of food and drink but also in reinforcing environmentally-friendly habits.
